Herons, Wildfowl

This is a colour coded guide to how easy it is to see these birds in and around Wanborough. Please note that many of our birds migrate and can only be seen either in the spring/summer or the autumn/winter. This means there will be something to find all year round. If you need help identifying a bird and can't find it here, then try the "Identify a bird" section on the RSPB website.

Frequent visitor fairly easy to find around the village and surrounds

More difficult to spot, rare to find in the village, you will have to go looking for these

Grey Heron

Often seen performing an aerial drop into your back garden, to poach the fish out of the garden pond! Has been seen around the village

Little Egret

Individuals have been seen in the watery gullies of outlying fields hunting for amphibians.

Mute Swan

Like most wildfowl will be heard overheard as they move to either Coate Water or lakes to the north

White-fronted Goose

Will be heard overheard as they move to either Coate Water or lakes to the north but more often at dusk or later and usually in winter

Canada Goose

Occasionally seen feeding in the fields around the parish these will be heard overheard as they move to either Coate Water or lakes to the north. They nest at PGL and Coate Water is full of them.

Mallard (Duck)

These are often found next at PGL and Coate Water is full of these too, though look out for cross breeds with other duck species.

Tufted Duck

Easy to spot on Coate Water and other bodies of water, the tuft on the back of the head and Blue beak gives it away! These are also nesting at PGL
