A group of volunteers had become aware that there were many widows, widowers and others in the villages of Wanborough, Hinton Parva, Liddington and Bishopstone. They felt there was a need to bring these people and others together to socialise. They decided that a monthly coffee morning would be a way to achieve this goal and provide an opportunity to fund raise for local charities at the same time.
The Community Connect coffee morning started life in May 2017. Soon after this the team were approached by the Wanborough Farmers' Market stall holders, with the request that they join the monthly market and form a Café. The market traders felt that having coffee served would encourage more people to attend the Market, help boost sales at the stalls and help support the coffee morning team in their goal. Community Connect joined with the Farmers' Market in September 2017 and became the Community Connect Café.
At the café the coffee, tea and cakes are served free of charge to all and customers are given the opportunity to donate to the charity of the month instead. The charities supported are largely local, but sometimes national, with a local office. Occasionally, a small local charity will approach the team for support and, if possible, we will do so. One such charity was Dressability, which alters clothes for people with disabilities.
